Advantages of rebreathers include: • Warm breathing air!—the chemical process of removing CO2 from recycled air heats the gas up to around 105° F. • The high percent of O2 reduces post dive fatigue. • You can get up close and personal with marine animals that would normally be frightened by the underwater racket that standard SCUBA systems make. • Your bottom time remains the same no matter how fast you breath, how hard you work underwater, or how deep you dive. So cool! We offer everything you need in equipment. We offer training as well if you need it! Rebreathers require special training. Rebreathers have been around for many years as an expensive system used primarily by the military to avoid bubble trails. Recent developments have brought the price down to a range where serious divers can now afford the technology. Rebreathers take advantage of the fact that humans typically extract only a portion of the O2 breathed into the lungs while expelling CO2. A rebreather recycles that air, removing the CO2 and replenishing the O2. There are both fully closed-circuit and “semi-closed” rebreather (SCR) systems. A fully closed system uses a pure oxygen supply metered into a circulating “inert” gas carrier. A CO2 scrubber removes exhaled CO2. An oxygen sensor monitors the O2 concentration in the breathing loop and opens a solenoid valve to add oxygen as necessary. Semi-closed systems are less expensive and easier to use and maintain. They operate without precision oxygen concentration control. Instead, they meter enriched air (Nitrox) into the breathing loop through a flow control orifice. An SCR system includes a “counterlung” to hold the exhaled air. CO2 is absorbed chemically (usually by soda lime). Nitrox at an O2 concentration somewhat above the operating breathing loop concentration is added. The actual partial pressure of O2 may vary but as long as it remains within safe limits, the diver is unaffected. The Dräger Dolphin is the premier and number-one selling rebreather on the market today with service available anywhere in the world. It is the right choice for most users. The Dolphin comes with orifices for 60%, 50% and 40% Nitrox use. The 40%-O2 orifice is suitable for dives to 100 ft, but we suggest adding a 32%-O2 orifice for dives in the 90–132 ft range. You will also need a 27 cu ft tank for your Nitrox fill, and we suggest owning your own fill adapter, since the Dräger valve is non-standard, and many air stations might not have the right adapter. You will need a supply of Drägersorb (soda lime, which absorbs CO2 from your breathing air), and disinfectant for servicing the cleaning loop (daily). And you will want a 13 cu ft pony bottle with its own regulator for emergency use, and to provide air for power inflators (BCs, drysuits, etc.). For monitoring your dive, you will need a computer compatible with semi-closed rebreathers. We recommend the Aladdin AIR Z O2.
