Mares HUB Avantgarde
$1,699.00
The new millennium ushers in the age of HUB: the first and only integrated diving system.
But HUB is much more. First of all, it is a system: i.e., a control unit which coordinates the diver's various instruments. Secondly, it is integrated: i.e., different instruments that where formerly scattered and separated are now incorporated into a single unit. HUB provides maximum freedom of movement, by eliminating trailing hoses and improving general comfort. The instruments are all readily at hand, yet concealable. In addition, HUB is equipped with Air-Trim, the new unit comprised of two simple button controls for inflation and deflation.
HUB opens up a new era of diving. Just go under water. Modern, elegant, compact and lightweight, incorporating new technical and aesthetic features.
HUB Century offers all the advantages of the integrated HUB system at a very affordable price.
Click on the name above for more specifications.
Note that the HUB does not include a computer. To provide a fully-integrated system, we reccommend an air-integrated computer such as the Sherwood Wisdom.
SPECIAL CLOSEOUT: One outdated model, size Medium is available at a closeout price of $899. Call or e-mail for description and to check availability. |

How to Choose a Regulator
Your regulator is your single most important piece of life-support gear as a SCUBA diver, and we recommend that you consider selecting a good one. Typically, what you should look for in a regulator is ease of breathing. The easier it is to breath, the less you think about your breathing and the less air you use, all of which translates into more bottom time! Secondarily, you should look for reliability (fewer moving parts) and serviceability. Popular brands can usually be serviced anywhere, but parts and expertise for less-popular brands can be harder to come by. All of our regulator offerings meet these basic requirements. Ease of breathing tend to improve with increasing price.
If you plan to dive in temperatures below 45° F (8 C), you should buy a regulator rated for cold water use. As the air expands through the regulator it can cool more than 10° below ambient, and moisture in the air can freeze and stop the delicate mechanism causing the regulator to either free-flow or not supply air at all. We recommend the Mares Abyss and Proton Ice regulators for these conditions. These regulators are designed to keep key moving parts from freezing.
Many divers experience “dry mouth,” particularly on the second or third dive of a multiple-tank day of diving due to the absence of moisture in their breathing air. You may want to consider a regulator such as the Mares Abyss or the Sherwood Maximus or Oasis which rehumidifies your breathing air.
In general, the lighter the second stage, the better from the point of view of jaw fatigue. The Sherwood regulators and the Mares Proton Ice are particularly lightweight if this is important for you.
Nitrox use is another consideration when choosing a regulator. If you are planning on diving Nitrox mixtures less than 39% oxygen, then all the regulators we have listed on our web page will work fine with no additional service. This recommendation may vary from that of other SCUBA Centers; however it is the same recommendation provided by the US Navy, NOAA, NAUI, PADI, TDI, and others in addition to Aqua Safaris. If you are planning on diving Nitrox 40% and higher, then an “oxygen-clean” regulator is required. If this regulator is to be used with Nitrox over 40%, then it must be exclusively used for Nitrox only.
As an all-around great regulator for the money, Aqua Safaris particularly recommends the Mares Abyss as a “five-star” regulator for its combination of easy breathability, reliability, moisture retention and overall value.
All divers should carry a back-up second stage regulator (an “octopus” regulator) for emergency use. In general, it is a good idea to choose an octopus from the same manufacturer as your main regulator to ensure ease of service and common parts. We offer one octopus from Mares and two octopus regulators from Sherwood—the Shadow Plus is an extra-small very streamlined regulator that links with your BC in an inflator-integrated design. Both Sherwood octopus regulators feature an omnidirectional mouthpiece that can function in any orientation.
If you’re still confused, feel free to call or e-mail, and we can help you figure out the best regulator for your personal dive-style and budget. We stock regulators from other manufacturers as well, plus we can also get almost anything, but some items cannot be advertised for sale on-line! Please call or e-mail if you don’t see what you’re looking for.
