Speargun Buyer’s Guide
There are two main types of spearguns, pneumatic and band guns. Pneumatic guns use an airspring to make a
gun which is more streamlined, more accurate and more powerful for it size than an equivalent band gun.
However its power is limited, and the airspring tends to require somewhat more service and maintenance.
Band guns use large latex or natural rubber tubular bands for power. Maintenance is easy, and they are
simple and reliable. They are not power-limited; if you want more power, you can use more or heavier bands.
Most competitive spearfishermen use band guns. Both types of guns come in a range of sizes which can
deliver a range of powers and shoot spears of varying sizes. A given size gun is matched to a spear length,
but you can still select spears of varying diameter and equip it with different kinds of tips.
As with any kind of fishing you need to match the size of your gear to the size and type of fish you plan
to catch and the distance from which you plan to shoot. And you need to know the laws that apply in the waters you plan to fish. For example, pneumatic
spearguns are not legal in Mexican waters. In the United States, spearfishing is generally illegal in
freshwater and regulated by State Fish and Game Commissions in coastal waters. (Links for Canada and Mexico are included as well.)
As with any new activity, if you are a beginner, it is best to find an experienced fisherman to learn from
or take a hunting and collecting course such as Aqua Safaris offers.
You may even wish to start with pole fishing for small fish. One easy way to introduce yourself to
Spearfishing is to join Aqua Safaris for one of its semi-annual Baja California trips which usually features
Hunting and Collecting classes. In addition to great diving, you can learn spearfishing and other game
collecting techniques as well as how to clean and cook your catch. Typical trips are $499 for 10 days! Detailed
guides to all the different kinds sizes and uses of guns are beyond the scope of this introduction, but
fell free to call or e-mail us with questions about your specific needs. You might also want to consult the on-line article, “Choosing the Appropriate Speargun,” by Ray Klefstad
Aqua Safaris believes that if you are shooting at fish with a speargun, you should be sure that you will
be able to collect
and eat your catch. This means
that you should know what you’re doing and use the right equipment so that you can be confident of a clean
kill when you pull the trigger. Practice with your new gun first, so that you know its range and
accuracy. You can
make a simple practice target out of a plastic milk bottle (put a little air into it and tie it to a rock)
to use either in open water or in a swimming pool.
Make sure you take your practice targets back out of the water and dispose of them
properly! On the California coast, you can also practice on giant kelp.
When you catch your fish, you will need a way get them back to your boat or the shore. You can use a game
bag for small fish, lobster, abalone, etc., but for larger fish, a stainless steel stringer is easier and
faster to use. You should also carry a terminator knife to insert into the brain of the fish you catch to
complete the kill.
Bigger game fish may still be able to swim strongly after being speared. If you are going to bring home
such a fish, you will need either a reel or float line attached to your spear. It is best to use one with
a elastic cord base to absorb the shock of any sudden move made by the fish and good strong float line so that
the fish stays caught. A float line is attached to a surface float instead of the diver; its length should
be about twice the depth at which you plan to hunt. Most commonly, these are used by divers who
follow the line to the surface float and then “go for a ride” until they can pull in the fish.
In general, larger diameter spear shafts are slower but have more penetrating ability and are stronger.
Thinner shafts are faster and more accurate but are more easily bent. Thinner shafts are lighter and have
less recoil than thicker shafts.
Remember that the size of the gun and the choice of bands (for a band gun) is important in matching your
equipment to your target prey. Bands tend to weaken with time after stretching. The spring force will drop
significantly over the course of a dive. If you have extra bands, you
can rotate them to minimize this effect.
Most spears are modular in design with separate screw-on tips. You can replace individual damaged parts
and carry a range of different tip styles to suit the needs of an individual hunt. Use larger wings for
bigger fish. For smaller fish, smaller wings are preferable; the spear tip must go all the way through the fish so that the wings open on the
far side. A detachable tip is preferable for big game, reducing the force can exert on the tip to wiggle
free. The modular tip design also allows
you to mix and match tip length, wing size and point type. There are two main point styles. A “tricut”
point made of soft stainless steel with sharp edges for efficient penetration is good for open water
fishing where the likelihood of hitting a rock is less (though damaged tips can usually be resharpened with
a file). If you plan to fish in and around rocks or reefs, use a “rock” point with a hardened stainless
steel tip less likely to be damaged by encounters with a hard surface. Be sure you
know the thread size for your shafts. There are several in common use. At Aqua Safaris, we have tips and adaptors for all of them.
