An
Adventurer’s Paradise. Belize is a peaceful
English-speaking country with 40% of its area
dedicated to parks and natural reserves. Belize
is a close, relatively easy-to-get-to destination
nestled between Mexico and Guatamala on the
Carribean coast. The islands off of the coast
of Belize are where one finds the best diving:
Ambergis Cay: The most developed island—a short flight from Belize City or about a
two hour boat ride on a fast water taxi. It
is the only island with some choice for night
life and good diving. Most of the diving is
done by boat on the reef on the ocean side of
the island.
Cay Cocker: Next to Ambergis Cay, it is
a quiet, sleepy island with a number of small
resorts and restaurants. The diving is similar
to Ambergis Cay and accomodations are less expensive.
The
best diving in the Belize area is the outer
Light House Reef, Half Moon Cay, etc. It’s
great diving! Boats can be chartered from both
Cay Cocker or Ambergis Cay and it is well worth
it. Inside Light House Reef is the Blue Hole—and
it’s just that, a blue hole and not much
else. Few fish—if you are lucky a shark
or two. The main destination for most divers
here is a small cave that goes 10–20 ft
into the wall at a depth of 160+ ft. The Blue
Hole may be worth skipping unless you want to
say you have been there. The other diving around
the reef is fantastic.
Other worthwhile activities are the Belize
Zoo, river rafting and the Mayan ruins.
